Who We Are & How We Do It
It’s not a job… it’s our life. The horses, the stables, the carriages, and the community. It’s what we know, love, and aim to shed some light on.
The Charleston Carriage Association for Responsible Equine Safety (Charleston C.A.R.E.S.) was formed by Charleston Carriage Works, Old South Carriage Company, and Palmetto Carriage Works to develop and promote the highest standards for the Charleston horse-drawn carriage community.
As members of Charleston C.A.R.E.S. we provide our animals with the utmost respect and we genuinely love each and every one of our horses and mules. Our beautiful animals allow us to provide a service to the community of Charleston and in return we provide them with the highest level of care.
What you may not know about our industry is that we are heavily regulated by the city, from zones of operations that dictate a tour route to the recording of our horses’ temperatures, respiration, and overall conditions before and after each tour. There is a specific set of rules and regulations that we not only adhere to but go above and beyond to ensure the best possible life for our horses.
Our horses are continuously rotated between our well-ventilated stables downtown and our sprawling farms on Johns Island. Our goal is to give you a closer look into our industry and the lives of our horses. We are a part of the fabric of Charleston and our roots run deep. We look forward to continuing to serve our community while providing the highest level of care for our animals.
