The reason behind requiring tour guide licenses
The members of C.A.R.E.S are working to preserve the historical integrity that carriage tours bring to the area and ensure that tourists have the best experience possible.
And you may be thinking, so what? Why does their experience matter?
Tourism matters. It’s as simple as that.
The contribution that tourism brings to our community’s economy is invaluable. When tourists visit our city, they spend money which brings not only business growth but tax dollars as well. These tax dollars allow us to fund projects in our city which benefit us all.
Successful tours bring about positive views of Charleston, however tour guides who cannot answer questions about the city would leave tourists misinformed and with an inaccurate understanding of Charleston’s vast history. At C.A.R.E.S, we want to keep the steadfast reputation of the historic city we get to call home.
The quality of tour guides reflects a city, and ours provide a unique experience for guests who will learn a lot about what Charleston has to offer. So when we think about why tour guide licenses matter, it’s about the quality of tours we are giving our guests and the experience they take away as a result.. The test and licensing ensure that the tour guides who pass it not only know the baseline information needed to conduct a historical tour throughout downtown Charleston, but that they are also equipped to be true ambassadors of our city.
